Welcome to Coryates Studio

Welcome to Coryates Studio, the home of artist and maker Roger Taylor, where two traditional crafts come together: original watercolour painting and handmade woodturning and carving. Based in Dorset, Coryates Studio offers an opportunity to discover artwork and crafted pieces made by hand, with each one created individually rather than being produced as part of a mass market collection.

Roger's work spans two very different creative disciplines, from the delicate, expressive qualities of watercolour to the natural character and tactile appeal of turned and carved wood. Whether you're looking for an original painting to bring colour and atmosphere to your home or a distinctive wooden piece with practical and decorative appeal, Coryates Studio is a place to find something that has been made with the utmost care and individuality.

Two collections, one studio

Original Watercolours

Watercolour is at the very heart of Coryates Studio, with Roger creating original paintings, with a special focus on landscapes. The medium lends itself beautifully to capturing the changing character of the countryside, from subtle shifts in light and colour to the atmosphere of a specific place.

An original watercolour is more than just a picture for your wall. It's an individual piece of artwork, created directly by the artist, with the marks, washes, and details that make that particular painting unique. Instead of choosing something that has been reproduced thousands upon thousands of times, you can own an artwork with its own character and story.

The collection includes mounted and framed watercolour paintings, ready for you to enjoy in your home, as well as greetings cards that provide a more accessible way to share Roger's work. Explore the Watercolours page to see the paintings that are currently available, and find the landscapes that are brought to life in Roger's work.

Woodturning and Carving

As well as painting, Roger creates handmade pieces from wood, using traditional woodturning and carving techniques to reveal the character and form of the material. The current collection includes turned table lamps, bowls, and candlesticks, bringing craftsmanship into everyday surroundings.

Working with wood means that every piece starts with a material that has its own natural variation, so there isn't another that is the exact same. Grain, colour, texture, and form all contribute to the final object, which means that there are no replicas. Turning and carving also require a lot of patience, precision, and an understanding of how the material is going to respond as it is worked.

That individuality that it has is one of the reasons to choose handmade. A mass produced object may be designed to look the same as hundreds or thousands of others, whereas a handmade piece has its own light differences and evidence of the person who made it. It can become more than simply something functional - it can be an object with personality that is made to be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.

Why Choose Handmade?

01

There is something especially satisfying about owning an original piece of art, or a handmade object. You are not simply buying something to fill a space, but instead you are choosing a piece that has been thought up, made, and then finished by an individual artist.

02

For collectors, an original watercolour offers the opportunity to own a one-off work that cannot be exactly replicated ever. For those that are furnishing a new home, a handmade wooden bowl, candlestick, or a lamp can add warmth, character, and even a sense of individuality to an interior.

03

Handmade work can also make a thoughtful choice when you are looking for something that is different from what you already have. Instead of choosing an item designed for the widest possible audience, you can choose something with its own character and craftsmanship, making it a special addition to your home.
